Huishan Scenic Area is located in the western urban area of Wuxi City, at the foot of Mount Huiquan. The park is surrounded by Huije Road to its south, Huishan Ancient Town Commercial Street to its north, the Grand Canal Yinyuan Park to its east and the Huilian Road Scenic Area to its west. The park covers an area of about 3.5 square kilometers, featuring both historic and cultural characteristics as well as ecological recreational activities. The scenic area is divided into Xi Hui Garden Heritage, Xihui Park and Huishan Ancient Town. As a protected cultural heritage zone, Huishan Ancient Town is a key tourism resource in the region. The 1.53km2 ancient town is located in the eastern side of the famous Xihui District in Wuxi. IMore than a hundred places of interest can be found in Huishan Ancient Town. These include 18 national, provincial and municipal-level cultural relics, 26 famous historical relics, as well as a total of 61 ancient and famous trees (19 species). Founded in 1600 before the Northern and Southern Dynasties, Huishan had witnessed the Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties, and is known as Wuxi’s "open-air history museum". This is where a wealth of physical and intangible cultural heritage gathers and this is the main location where the Wu culture is displayed. Over 118 ancestral halls and ancestral gardens dating back to the Tang, Song, Ming and Qing dynasties are distributed throughout the township. Huishan is famous for being the only location in China to have such a dense concentration and large diversity of ancestral architecture. The township boasts of 11 main categories of ancestral halls including miaoci (ancestral temple), zongci (clan hall), xianxianci (wise men hall), Zhongxiaoci (piety hall), zhuanci (temple honoring a specific person) etc, as well as more than 70 family temples. Therefore, the township is also known as a "living fossil" of Chinese temple culture as well as a unique cultural phenomenon in the country and the world. The spectrum of Chinese family names is evident in this township and one can trace the roots of his family name culture here. These cultural relics play an important role in the study of traditional genealogies and ancestral temple culture. The rich southern Wu culture is reflected in these ancient temples, ancient springs, ancient gardens, ancient shrines, ancient rivers, ancient bridges, ancient trees, cultural relics and cultural landscapes, as well as the intangible cultural heritage art forms that originated from the Huishan Temple Fair, such as Huishan clay figurines, tin embroidery, bamboo carving etc. An ancient scholarly vibe can be felt throughout the well-preserved ancestral halls, gardens, monasteries and studies in the main area of Huishan Ancient Town. More than a hundred historic figures have been known to have visited or settled here, including Su Shi and Wen Zhengming etc. The ancestral temple garden of Huishan Ancient Town has cleverly made use of its surrounding natural environment to achieve harmony between man and nature, by constructing gardens with real mountains and water bodies. The famous Second Spring Under Heaven, which has seen gatherings of scholars and visits from emperors for the past 1,200 years, represents the center of Chinese tea culture. In 2010, Huishan Ancient Town was awarded the “National Model Project for Traditional Architectural Preservation”. In June 2011, it was successfully selected as one of the top ten “Famous Cultural Heritage Streets in China”. In November 2012, the “Wuxi Huishan Ancestral Hall Culture” was announced by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage as a “Nominee for World Cultural Heritage in China”. With its unique ancestral culture heritage at the core, Huishan Ancient Town is regarded as a beautiful place of interest that showcases Wuxi's traditional arts and culture to the world!
